Sorry for the hiatus be we're back with the long awaited Justice League : The shattered Paragon but does it live up to expectation? Coming in at 50 minutes long this is one of the longest fan films out there. Nathaniel Shields once again takes on the role as director, writer, editor and visual effects creator. Justice League: The Shattered Paragon is a prequel to 'Trinity Force', featuring Superman, Batman, Wonder-Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Super-Girl, Lex Luthor and a rather original Joker.
The scope of this film is incredibly bold on behalf of Nathaniel considering the budget restrictions and we're pleasantly surprised in some areas. The story is simply epic with one or two jaw dropping moments that'll make you gasp. If you're a fan of the DC universe like we are then you'll be pleased to know Nathaniel dares to go places where few filmmakers would. The score is possibly the best we've heard for a fan film. It's absorbing and bold in all the right places and undoubtedly bolsters the films overall theatrical feel so huge shout out to composer Ashton Gleckman!
Unsurprisingly though, the creative weight on Nathaniel's shoulders compromises elements of the film. The VFX are a mixed bag of sometimes quite theatrical visuals to blindingly obvious green screen which will at times suck you out of the film. Some scenes could have been shot at real world locations without much complication. There also seems to be an inconsistent use of sound effects. For instance, the Green Lantern and The Flash would use their abilities but you'd sometimes never know if it were left to the sound effects alone, you'd have to be visually informed which is a shame considering the effects are powerful and perfectly timed in other areas. Perhaps my biggest gripe was Superman's (Ben Johnson) lack of emotional expression. There's a lot, A LOT for Superman to get emotional about in this film but Superman comes across as stale and robotic, lacking heart and energy. Physically however Ben fits the role which isn't the case with the supporting Justice League members who need to gain a few pounds of muscle to authentically portray their roles.
Ultimately, delivering a high quality 50 minute fan film without additional support for editing, visual effects etc... is next to impossible. Despite this Nathaniel has delivered a dramatic and daring film well worth watching. With his third film already in the works and having won 'Best Fan Film' at Super Geek Festival, SuperCon 2016 in Miami Florida, we're confident Shield Productions will only get better with each film so show your support below!
